Gentildonna edges Orfevre in Japan Cup
Posted
Champion filly Gentildonna has edged boom horse Orfevre in a driving finish in the Japan Cup (2,400m) in Tokyo.
Gentildonna, the winner of Japan's fillies triple crown, crossed the line a nose in front of Orfevre and had to survive a stewards inquiry before being declared the winner of the $5.6 million classic.
Second favourite Rulership, ridden by Australia's Craig Williams, completed a Japanese trifecta by finishing third.
Gentildonna is trained by Sei Ishizaka and ridden by Yasunari Iwata, who won the 2006 Melbourne Cup aboard Delta Blues.
The result, however, is yet another heart-breaking loss for Orfevre, himself a triple crown winner in Japan.
Early last month he ran a narrow second in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in Paris after looking to have the race won in the straight.
His conqueror that day, Solemia, travelled to Tokyo to renew the rivalry but could only manage 13th.
Other European-trained runners Red Cadeaux, Jakkalberry and Mount Athos, who all contested the Melbourne Cup earlier this month, also never looked winning chances.
They finished eighth, 11th and 12th respectively.
