Sunday Racing's Gentildonna swept through the straight at Tokyo Racecourse and powered clear to a five-length victory over Verxina in the $2,854,224 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) (Jpn-G1) on Sunday.

The three-year-old Deep Impact filly covered 2,400 meters (11.93 furlongs) on firm turf in 2:23.60, easily setting a stakes record. Robe Decollete set the previous record time of 2:25.30 in 2007.

Gentildonna entered the Japanese Oaks off of a half-length win in the 1,600-meter (7.95-furlong) Oka Sho (Japanese One Thousand Guineas) (Jpn-G1) on April 8 at Hanshin. Jockey Yuga Kawada settled his mount near the back of the 18-horse field on Sunday, and Gentildonna patiently waited until she entered the straight before launching her winning bid.

The bay filly drew off from her challengers in the final 200 meters as much the best and appeared to relish the added distance. She became the 13th filly to score the classic double.

According to trainer Sei Ishizaka, Gentildonna will aim to become only the fourth horse in history to win all three legs of Japan's filly Triple Crown by contesting the 2,000-meter (9.94-furlong) Shuka Sho (Jpn-G1) at Kyoto Racecourse in October. Apapane last accomplished that feat in 2010.

Gentildonna's win also marks the first Group 1 win beyond a mile for progeny of Deep Impact, arguably the best racehorse in Japanese history and a young sire who is beginning to live up to his name in terms of his offspring's success. Last week, Deep Impact earned his first classic win as a sire outside of Japan when Beauty Parlour won the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French One Thousand Guineas) (Fr-G1) at Longchamp.

Gentildonna's career record now stands at four wins from six starts. Bred by Northern Racing, she is out of the Group 1-winning Bertolini mare Donna Blini and is a full sister to Group 3 winner Donau Blue.
