Gentildonna goes out in style

Darryl Sherer - 28 Dec 2014
Gentildonna gave the massive crowd a Hollywood ending with victory in Sunday’s Grade I Arima Kinen, her seventh domestic victory at the highest level and equalling the record established by her sire Deep Impact, on her final start.
The five-year-old, who made history with back-to-back Japan Cup triumphs in 2012 and 2013, had not won since this year's Group I Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan where she beat Cirrus Des Aigles.

Keita Tosaki had the task of steering Gentildonna in the 59th running of the Arima Kinen in front of 110,000 fans.

Gentildonna enjoyed the run of the race behind the leaders along the inside around the tight Nakayama circuit, striking the front soon after turning for home.

The mare then held off To The World to score by ¾-length with the favourite Gold Ship in third.

Just A Way, the world's highest-rated horse, finished strongly for fourth, just in front of Epiphaneia.
