Gentildonna to bow out Sunday at Nakayama
Darryl Sherer - 28 Dec 2014
Japan's superstar mare Gentildonna will bid to make her final race start a winning one in Sunday's Grade I Arima Kinen (2500m) at Nakayama.
One of seven in the 16-strong field sired by Deep Impact, Gentildonna will equal his record of seven domestic Grade 1 victories if successful.
The first 10 horses in the Arima Kinen field are chosen by votes from the public. Gentildonna was the most popular choice ahead of Gold Ship.
Gentildonna will jump from barrier four with Keita Tosaki in the saddle in what will be her first start at the tricky Nakayama track.
It will be no easy task for the five-year-old however as she is opposed by the likes of Epiphaneia, the four-length winner of the Japan Cup where Gentildonna was fourth, Just A Way, still the highest-rated horse in the world despite defeats at his past two starts, and the enigmatic Gold Ship, winner of the race in 20123.
Trainer Sei Ishizaka is anticipating a big performance from Gentildonna.
"Who knows how the race will turn out, but at least the turf appears to be in relatively good condition, which was a huge reason we decided to race her at Nakayama," he told the JRA website.
"She's worked abreast last week and this week so she is ready to give it everything she's got."
