Cup Heroine Retires In Blaze Of Glory

Gentildonna bows out with superb Gr1 victory
Gentildonna claims her seventh top-flight success in the Arima Kinen
Gentildonna claims her seventh top-flight success in the Arima Kinen
Japan’s end-of-season grand prix had a fairytale ending as hugely popular racemare Gentildonna  bowed out in style with her seventh victory at the top level, equalling the national record established by her sire, the great Deep Impact.
The five-year-old, who made history with back-to-back Japan Cup triumphs in 2012 and 2013, scored in the Gr1 Arima Kinen run over 2500m by three-quarters of a length over longshot To The World, the mount of William Buick.
Gentildonna had not won since this year’s Dubai Sheema Classic, where she beat Cirrus Des Aigles with Ryan Moore in the saddle. Keita Tosaki did the steering in the 59th running of the Arima Kinen, where Gentildonna brought the house down in front of a crowd of 110,000 in a Y416 million (£2.22m/€2.84m) contest known in Japan as the people’s race.
Tosaki said: “I’m really glad she was able to show her best performance in the last race of her career. When I rode her the last time [in the Tenno Sho (Autumn)], she was easy to ride and very clever, so I felt very comfortable riding her this time.
“I was able to race her just as I had imagined, settling her towards the front and making use of her persistent late charge. She responded well until the end.”
Sent off a 7.7-1 shot, Gentildonna had a favourable draw in gate four and was always in a favourable stalking position on the rail round the tight Nakayama circuit.
Just A Way - also retired after running fourth
Just A Way – also retired after running fourth
As the race developed into a sprint, severely compromising several of her fancied rivals, she got the better of Japan Cup victor Epiphaneia, who had hit the front after turning for home. The mare then held off To The World, who touched off fans’ favourite – and 5-2 market leader – Gold Ship for second place.
Just A Way, the world’s highest-rated horse, finished strongly for fourth after being hampered by a wide draw, one place in front of Epiphaneia.
Like Gentildonna, Just A Way has now been retired.

Gentildonna scores a crowning victory in this year’s Arima Kinen
29 DEC 2014 | JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION
Fourth pick Gentildonna scored an impressive victory in this year’s Arima Kinen to round off her career with a grand finale. She became the fifth horse in JRA history to achieve seven G1 titles on turf along with her sire, Deep Impact.

Her career earnings of 1,726,030,400 yen are the second highest in history behind T. M. Opera O and highest among mares. This win marked the 12th JRA-G1 victory for trainer Sei Ishizaka, following his win in last year’s Japan Cup with Gentildonna, and third JRA-G1 title for jockey Keita Tosaki, following his Hanshin Juvenile Fillies title with Red Reveur.

Gentildonna made a clean start from stall four and settled just off the pace in third behind Verxina and Epiphaneia. Traveling three to four lengths behind the two frontrunners through the backstretch and making headway through the last turns, the Deep Impact mare entered the lane in second, right behind Epiphaneia who inherited the lead from the tiring Verxina, dueled strongly with this year’s Japan Cup winner in front of the cheering crowd, and managed to pull away 100 meters out for her career-final victory.

“I’m really glad she was able to show her best performance in the last race of her career. When I rode her the last time (Tenno Sho (Autumn)), she was easy to ride and very clever, so I felt very comfortable riding her this time. I was able to race her just as I had imagined, settling her towards the front and making use of her persistent late charge. She responded well until the end,” commented jockey Keita Tosaki.

After the final race of the day, Gentildonna’s retirement ceremony was held with over 40,000 race-goers staying on in the chilly evening to pay tribute to the outstanding mare who won the Fillies’ Triple Crown and was chosen Horse of the Year in 2012, and also became the first horse to achieve back-to-back Japan Cup victories last year.

Sent off ninth favorite, three-year-old To the World camped in mid-pack and two wide up the final turn.

Unaffected by the early bids made by his rivals, the colt was calmly guided through an opening in early stretch and responded well thereafter, especially in the last 100 meters where he found another gear and closed strongly to outrun Epiphaneia on the inside and hold off a fast-closing Gold Ship from his outside for the runner-up seat.

Breaking from a wide stall, the 2012 victor and odds-on favorite Gold Ship was reserved in fifth to sixth from the rear and steadily made his bid, gaining on the leaders from the end of the backstretch and rounding the third corner.

Kicking into full gear by the last turn and in fourth to fifth from the front entering the straight, the multiple-G1 winner, though no match for the winner, galloped on strongly enough to battle for the runner-up seat, but was a nose short at the wire for third.

In his first Arima Kinen challenge, Just a Way sat in third to fourth from the rear and a length or two behind Gold Ship after breaking from a wide draw. Unable to keep up with the gray horse as he made his early bid, the third favorite angled out wide for his last career-run and although with too much ground to make up, he displayed his extraordinary speed, which ranked him the No.1 thoroughbred in the world. The Heart’s Cry horse clocked the fastest three-furlong drive of the stellar field to finish a neck fourth, and will stand at stud at the Shadai Stallion Station next season.

Second favorite Epiphaneia broke smoothly to chase the pace one to two lengths behind pacesetter Verxina, and was first to enter the lane after picking off the tiring leader before the final corner. After grudgingly giving up his brief lead to the winner just after the furlong pole, this year’s Japan Cup champion fought well but surrendered the runner-up position at the wire to the fast closing runners for a close fifth.

Gentildonna Goes Out a Winner in Arima Kinen

It is the single greatest betting race in the world, and Sunday’s G1 Arima Kinen lacked neither for quality nor excitement nor pari-mutuel action. Making the final start of what had already been an illustrious career, Sunday Racing Co. Ltd’s Gentildonna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) book-ended a season that began with a spectacular victory in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan in March with a stirring success in front off 110,000 largely adoring fans at Nakayama Racecourse. Those who packed the stands also put it through the windows. The turnover on the feature race alone was nearly ¥39 billion (over US$322 million). The overall handle for the program was in excess of ¥51 billion (over US$422 million). And the fans got what they came to see.

Run for the 59th time, the Arima Kinen was conceived of as a season-ending ‘Grand Prix’--an all-star event at the end of the season for which the runners are selected by the fans. Gentildonna fast endeared herself to the locals, in no small part due to her 2006 Arima Kinen-winning sire, and she made some history of her own in 2012, sweeping the Japanese Filly Triple Crown with victories in the G1 Oka Sho, G1 Yushun Himba and G1 Shuka Sho, defeating Verxina (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) on each occasion, then closed the season with a nose defeat of favored Orfevre (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}) in the G1 Japan Cup.

Runner-up to the late St Nicholas Abbey (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) in the 2013 Sheema Classic, Gentildonna was third to Gold Ship (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}) in the G1 Takarazuka Kinen and second to Just a Way (Jpn) (Heart’s Cry {Jpn}) in the Tenno Sho before becoming the first to go back-to-back in the Japan Cup, defeating Denim and Ruby (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) by the minimum margin.

Her 5-year-old season began on something of a sour note, as she could finish only sixth at 3-5 in the G2 Kyoto Kinen, but she stripped fitter for the effort in the Sheema Classic. Bottled up with nowhere to go at a crucial stage, she finally got room beneath Ryan Moore, and stretched away once clear to best Cirrus des Aigles (Fr) (Even Top {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths. A non-factor when ninth to the repeating Gold Ship in this year’s Takarazuka Kinen June 29, Gentildonna--much better with a race under her belt--rattled home to finish second in the Tenno Sho off that four-month layoff Nov. 2, but was soundly defeated into fourth by Epiphaneia (Jpn) (Symboli Kris S) in search of the Japan Cup three-peat Nov. 30.

Accordingly sent off the fourth betting choice, Gentildonna was bounced away from the gates by JRA leading rider Keita Tosaki and settled in a close-up third as Verxina was hustled along to set a soft pace from her low draw in advance of Epiphaneia, who was wide early before getting down closer to the rails to chase from second. Gold Ship, the 2012 Arima Kinen hero and number one in the voting, was a bit wide in midfield down the back, while Just a Way raced near the tail in what was his career finale. Epiphaneia had the leader in the crosshairs as they raced on the final turn, but Gold Ship was warming up to the task with a wide run, and Tosaki had Gentildonna poised three away from the inside, ready to call on her superior stamina. Epiphaneia cut the corner and pinched a break, and while it took Gentildonna some time and with programs flying through the Nakayama sky, she found the wire best to go out on top. To the World weaved his way through to snag second on the wire from Gold Ship, while Just a Way rallied smartly to miss by just over a length in fourth.

"I’m really glad she was able to show her best performance in the last race of her career," commented Tosaki, who was piloting just the third Group 1 winner of his career. "When I rode her the last time [second in the G1 Tenno Sho-Autumn Nov. 2], she was easy to ride and very clever, so I felt very comfortable riding her this time. I was able to [handle] her just as I expected, settling her towards the front and making use of her persistent late charge. She responded well until the end."

Some 40,000 fans braved the chilly evening air and remained for a post-race retirement ceremony to honor Gentildonna, who heads to the breeding shed with over $18 million in career earnings.

Easily the most accomplished offspring of the good sprinter Bertolini (Danzig), Donna Blini fetched just 20,000gns as a Doncaster St Leger sale yearling and made an immediate impression at the races. Trained by Brian Meehan, Donna Blini won her career debut at Newmarket and was runner-up in a listed stakes at Beverly before adding the G2 Cherry Hinton S. and later the G1 Cheveley Park Stud S. Though she tacked just one victory at three in 2006, she’d done enough to cement her status as a potential broodmare and was snapped up by Katsumi Yoshida for 500,000gns at that year’s Tattersalls December sale and was booked to Deep Impact in his first year at stud in 2007. It was a match apparently made in heaven, as Donna Blini’s first produce by the stallion was Donau Blue (Jpn), who improved with age to win a pair of Group 3 tests and was twice placed in Group 1 miles in Japan in 2012. Also Group 2 placed at five, Donau Blue was runner-up in this year’s G3 Kyoto Himba. Donna Blini is the dam of an as-yet unraced 2-year-old full-brother to Gentildonna named Legende (Jpn) and produced a full-sister to the superstar this past January after being barren for 2013.

Gentildonna ends career in style

NAKAYAMA Dec 29 2014

Japanese champion Gentildonna has ended her career in triumph, claiming her seventh Group One win in the Arima Kinen.
She is one of five Japanese horses, including her sire Deep Impact, to win seven Group One races on turf and her career earnings of Y1,726,030,400 ($A18.22 million) are second only to T. M. Opera O.
The Arima Kinen is known as the people's race with 10 of the 16 runners each year selected by public vote.
A dual winner of the Japan Cup, Gentildonna made a clean start from gate four on Sunday and settled third behind Verxina and Epiphaneia and made her move rounding the home turn.
At the 100m mark, Gentildonna pulled away to beat To The World by three-quarters of a length.
"I'm really glad she was able to show her best performance in the last race of her career," jockey Keita Tosaki said.
"When I rode her the last time (Tenno Sho), she was easy to ride and very clever, so I felt very comfortable riding her this time.
"I was able to race her just as I had imagined, settling her towards the front and making use of her persistent late charge.
More than 40,000 of the 116,00 strong crowd stayed well after the last race for a special ceremony to mark the mare's retirement.
