This year´s Japan Cup didn´t look to have a great deal of depth to it and there were two clear market leaders. It proved a tactical affair too, with only a modest early pace set, and there was a bunched finish.
The right horse still emerged on top according to the market as GENTILDONNA just held on to follow up her success in the race last year. It wasn´t really run to suit her but she got a handy trip on the inside and wais really in front plenty soon enough, so should be rated better than the bare margin. This was well below the level of her 2012 performance, but class got her home in front and she became the first ever dual winner of the race.
Denim And Ruby motored home but the line came just too soon for her. The sole 3yo in attendance, she´s a dual Grade 2 winner this year and is knocking on the door at the top level, so her turn will surely come.
C&D winner Tosen Jordan, under William Buick, helped set the modest early fractions and therefore has to rate a little flattered. However, this was a return to near his best form.
Admire Rakti would have no doubt enjoyed more of a test, and that also applied to the loveable Dunaden, who had to race widest of all in the home straight. The veteran ran a cracker and clearly still has petrol in the tank.
Simenon really found this an insufficient test for a stayer and wasn´t beaten that far from his double-figure stall.
Gold Ship, Gentildonna´s main-market rival, was not ideally suited by the way this unfolded but did prove laboured once asked for everything.
Sole Brtish representative Joshua Tree, who landed the Canadian International for a third time under Ryan Moore last month, reportedly had some travel issues and was faced with the dreaded outside stall. He could never really get into it.[Dave Orton]
