Gentildonna overcomes trouble to take Sheema

Report: Meydan, Saturday
Dubai Sheema Classic Presented By Longines (Group 1)1m4f, turf
GENTILDONNA overcame a troubled passage to post another impressive win for Japan at Meydan under Ryan Moore.
Trained by Sei Ishizaka,Gentildonna was trapped on the inner rail as Christophe Soumillon and Cirrus Des Aigles prevented Moore from switching out inside the final couple of furlongs.
However, Moore managed to extricate himself from his difficult position and he was able to unleash the mare's potent turn of foot that took her past Cirrus Des Aigles with ease.
Moore said: "It was very rough early on. I managed to get a nice slot and I was getting a nice enough run but I was just hemmed in a bit in the straight. But when I pulled her out she has quickened up very well. She has got an awful lot of heart.
"She felt a stronger filly today than when I rode her last, she felt as though she has out on a bit of condition. She got warm beforehand but she is obviously exceptionally talented, she has done more than I expected her today."
Cirrus Des Aigles stuck on gamely to finish second once again and Ambivalent took third for trainer Roger Varian and Andrea Atzeni.
Soumillon said: "The pace was quite strong and I was watching Ryan all the way but unfortunately we were up against a dual Japan Cup winner."

Varian said: "I was delighted. Hopefully the owner will decide to keep her in training. Andrea thought she has improved from last year, she is a stronger filly.
"On that form she is going to be competitive in those good fillies' races in Europe in the summer. I hope we keep her going as there is definitely another big one to win with her."
There was a nasty incident in the early stages of the race when Mars hung violently out on the first turn and sent jockey Richard Hughes crashing through the rail.
Hughes was reported to be sitting up after the fall and was being loaded into an ambulance. He added that he has been winded by the fall. Mars suffered a fatal heart attack.

JUST A WAY produced a jaw-dropping performance to rout his rivals at Meydan on Saturday.
The previously unbeaten Vercingetorix went for home at the top of the straight and had most of his rivals beaten. Just A Way, however, was no normal opponent.
The Japanese runner, trained by Naosuke Sugai and ridden by Yuichi Fukunaga, zipped past Vercingetorix and finished powerfully to take an ultra-impressive win.
The visual impression created by the Japanese runner was matched by the clock as he took nearly three seconds off the course record for the race and posted a time that was five seconds faster than the average time for 1m1f.
Vercingetorix lost little in defeat as he took second while Dank ran on well from the rear to snatch third.
Fukunaga said: "That was amazing, he was very good."
Sir Michael Stoute, trainer of Dank, said: "We're pleased with third. She just couldn't quite get a run when she wanted to, but there are four others that happened to as well."
The Fugue was well beaten in 11th having chased the early pace and her trainer John Gosden said: "She is not quite herself. She hasn't had much time off since Hong Kong as she's run a bit flat, even though she had a good position in the race. These things happen. It's early in the year for a filly. I think we'll wait for Royal Ascot now."
