Gentildonna got up under Ryan Moore to pip the 2012 Dubai Sheema Classic Hero Cirrus Des Aigles in the final strides to land the $5m Dubai Sheema Classic in great style.
It was the second win for Japan on the night to level with Hong Kong early double. Hong Kong horses claimed the Al Qouz Sprint Group-1 and Dubai Golden Shaheen Group-1 while Japan walked away with the $5m Dubai Duty Free Group-1 and the second $5m Dubai Sheem Classic Group-1 to claim the second richest races of the night.
Ryan Moore was the thing which the Japanese mare has missed in her last year’s appearance and the Englishman did everything right to give his mount a perfect steering.
Moore said: “She was in her best form and responding keenly all the way.” Japanese trainer Sei Ishizaka added: “We have been preparing her for this race as she had the experience of racing on this ground. Last year she could have won the race, but there was something missing and I think it was the perfect steering of Ryan Moore.”
The 2012 winner of this race Cirrus des Aiges looked like a winner when Christophe Soumillon said go in the concluding stages. He bypassed the Irish mare Ambivalent in the straight but the Japanese mare was in a hurry and came full of running to sprint home impressively. It has been reported that the Dubai Sheema Classic would be the final appearance of the mare in the track as she will be retired to stud.
Christophe Soumillon, jockey of Cirrus des Aigles, said: He ran a fabulous race. I thought that he was going to win. Even when I saw Gentildonna, I thought she would find it difficult to catch us. When my horse quickened, he did it really well but (Gentildonna) is an outstanding champion and she beat us easily today. But I’m happy that he is once again a on the top of his game.”
Dominant’s jockey Joao Moreira said: “Unfortunately, there were a few horses that got into trouble in the first bend in front of me and that got me a little too far back. He ran an enormous race. Looking at what he has done in coming from second or third last to finish fifth, very close to the winner, it was a good run.”
