Gentildonna goes out in style

Darryl Sherer - 28 Dec 2014
Gentildonna gave the massive crowd a Hollywood ending with victory in Sunday’s Grade I Arima Kinen, her seventh domestic victory at the highest level and equalling the record established by her sire Deep Impact, on her final start.
The five-year-old, who made history with back-to-back Japan Cup triumphs in 2012 and 2013, had not won since this year's Group I Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan where she beat Cirrus Des Aigles.

Keita Tosaki had the task of steering Gentildonna in the 59th running of the Arima Kinen in front of 110,000 fans.

Gentildonna enjoyed the run of the race behind the leaders along the inside around the tight Nakayama circuit, striking the front soon after turning for home.

The mare then held off To The World to score by ¾-length with the favourite Gold Ship in third.

Just A Way, the world's highest-rated horse, finished strongly for fourth, just in front of Epiphaneia.

Japanese champion Gentildonna made the final race of her career a winning one with a bold score in the G1 Arima Kinen Sunday at Nakayama Racecourse.
The 5-year-old mare tracked a pace set by Verxina and ranged up on the far turn, battling Japan Cup winner Epiphaneia through the stretch and eventually pulling away to win by three-quarters of a length.
To The World was second; Gold Ship, who won the Arima Kinen in 2012, finished third. Just a Way, emphatic winner of the Dubai Duty Free in March, finished fourth.
Final time for the 2500 meters (just over twelve furlongs) was 2:35.30.
Winner of the Japanese Filly Triple Crown in her 3-year-old season, Gentildonna is the only two-time winner of the G1 Japan Cup and also won the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan Racecourse earlier this year. Her record now stands at 10 wins from 19 starts.

Gentildonna is owned by Sunday Racing Co. and was bred in Japan by Northern Farm. Sei Ishizaka is the mare’s trainer.
“I’m really glad she was able to show her best performance in the last race of her career,” said Keita Tosaki, Gentildonna’s jockey. “When I rode her the last time (Tenno Sho (Autumn)), she was easy to ride and very clever, so I felt very comfortable riding her this time. I was able to race her just as I had imagined, settling her towards the front and making use of her persistent late charge. She responded well until the end.”
After the last race on the card, over 40,000 people stuck around for a retirement ceremony held to honor the champion mare. Raceday attendance was reported as 115,878.
Full order of finish in the Arima Kinen: Gentildonna, To the World, Gold Ship, Just a Way, Epiphaneia, Lachesis, Last Impact, Tosen Ra, Denim and Ruby, Fenomeno, Satono Noblesse, Win Variation, One and Only, Verxina, Meisho Mambo, and Ocean Blue.

Gentildonna to bow out Sunday at Nakayama

Darryl Sherer - 28 Dec 2014
Japan's superstar mare Gentildonna will bid to make her final race start a winning one in Sunday's Grade I Arima Kinen (2500m) at Nakayama.
One of seven in the 16-strong field sired by Deep Impact, Gentildonna will equal his record of seven domestic Grade 1 victories if successful.
The first 10 horses in the Arima Kinen field are chosen by votes from the public. Gentildonna was the most popular choice ahead of Gold Ship.

Gentildonna will jump from barrier four with Keita Tosaki in the saddle in what will be her first start at the tricky Nakayama track.

It will be no easy task for the five-year-old however as she is opposed by the likes of Epiphaneia, the four-length winner of the Japan Cup where Gentildonna was fourth, Just A Way, still the highest-rated horse in the world despite defeats at his past two starts, and the enigmatic Gold Ship, winner of the race in 20123.

Trainer Sei Ishizaka is anticipating a big performance from Gentildonna.

"Who knows how the race will turn out, but at least the turf appears to be in relatively good condition, which was a huge reason we decided to race her at Nakayama," he told the JRA website.

"She's worked abreast last week and this week so she is ready to give it everything she's got."

The three-year-old To The World came flying to take second with the 7-2 favorite Gold Ship third a nose away. Just A Way finished a neck back in fourth and Epiphaneia was fifth.

Gentildonna, the 8-1 fourth choice, was a popular winner of the race as the field is set by fan voting to select the 10 most popular runners.

The rest of the field is determined in order of earnings. This year's public favorite was 2012 Arima Kinen victor Gold Ship with Gentildonna, the only two-time winner of the Japan Cup, voted second fan favourite.
A retirement ceremony was held for Gentildonna at the conclusion of Sunday's racing. More than 40,000 of the on-track crowd of 115,878 stayed back to pay tribute to the outstanding mare.
In earning her seventh victory at G1 level, Gentildonna equalled a record only four other horses in Japan Racing Association history have accomplished including her sire Deep Impact.
Her career earnings of about $US14.3 million rank as the second highest in JRA history behind T.M.Opera O, and is the highest among females.
Gentildonna settled third, racing three to four lengths behind the two front-runners through the backstretch. She entered the lane in second, right behind Epiphaneia, who took charge from the tiring Verxina and then gradually wore down Epiphaneia and pulled clear late.
"I'm really glad she was able to show her best in the last race of her career," said Keita Tosaki, who was riding for trainer Sei Ishizaka.
"I was able to race her just as I had imagined, settling her towards the front and making use of her persistent late charge. She responded well until the end."
Gentildonna retires with a 10-4-1 career line from 19 starts that include G1 wins in the 2012 Oka Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas), Yunshun Himba (Japanese Oaks) and Shuka Sho to sweep the Triple Crown for fillies and her unprecedented back-to-back Japan Cup victories in 2012 and 2013.
She was crowned Japan's Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old filly in 2012 and champion older mare in 2013. Her record includes a G1 win in the 2014 Dubai Sheema Classic in March on the Dubai World Cup card at Meydan.
She posted three consecutive losses following her Meydan victory, and was fourth in this year's Japan Cup in her most recent start.

Ippica, per Gentildonna chiusura in bellezza

All'ultima corsa in carriera, la giapponese vince l'Arima Kinen a Nakayama.

They have been on the go since Dubai in March, but Gentildonna and Just A Way will bring the curtain down on their respective careers on Sunday morning in the Grade 1 Arima Kinen at Nakayama Racecourse.
Gentildonna and Just A Way were both impressive winners at Meydan on World Cup night with respective wins in the Dubai Sheema Classic and Dubai Duty Free.
Since then, neither horse has reached the same level of form and their reputations have taken a knock for it.
The Arima Kinen is an invitation race, with 10 of the 16 berths voted by race fans.
As a sign of how far their respective stars have fallen, neither Just A Way, the world’s highest-rated thoroughbred, nor Gentildonna, the former darling of Japanese racing, topped the polls.
That accolade went to Gold Ship, who won the Takarazuka Kinen and Hanshin Daishoten this season.
Gentildonna is set to receive a grand retirement ceremony after the race, and all trainer Sei Ishizaka hopes is that the mare does herself justice.
“She’s been full of energy since the Japan Cup,” he said. “I see her and I see a racehorse who can’t wait to run again. This will be it for her, but all I want for her is to come home in one piece. It’s all I ask.”
Just A Way’s trainer had similar sentiments.
“After the Japan Cup he had, he’s ready to give it everything he’s got now,” Naosuke Sugai said. “This will be the last race for him, so I just want him to end his career with no regrets.”
